On March 29, MoCo Greens headed out to Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary to meet the residents, learn their stories, and help out with their upkeep. Farm Sanctuaries provide homes and care for animals that escape from, are rescued from, or surrendered by farm environments and are a manifestation of the Green Party’s Platform Article III Para K.5 injunction to “end the abuse of animals, including farm animals.” On this beautiful Sunday morning, MoCo Greens learned alot and had fun doing it. Take a look!

Moose was rescued from a Vermont dairy farm at just a few days old, before he could be sent to slaughter. Dairy farmers keep female cows continually pregnant so they produce milk, but the farms have no use for male offspring.

Mary handed a lively bunch of Golden Comet and Bantam hens some chickweed, a tasty (authorized) treat. Most of Rosie’s hens were abandoned or surrendered from backyard flocks when their owners moved or no longer wished to keep them.

Bear (yes, he is a pig!), who was rescued from the Outer Banks where he had been dumped, comes running when belly rubs are on offer.

Mira was intended to be part of a reproductive study, but when it was discovered that Mira was intersex, they were no longer wanted and were only saved from death by a student advocate. Mira trotted right up to Hal for a head scratch.

Sadie was lucky enough to be born in sanctuary after her mother Eleanor was rescued while pregnant. Eleanor and her entire herd were rescued together when the dairy farmer who had bought them to start a goat meat business had a change of heart.

At Rosie’s Sip and Paint events, visitors prepare paint plates for the pigs to get artistic, producing artwork like this one for sale at Rosie’s shop. Pigs naturally decorate their environments with flowers and greenery–not paint, though!

Mae Mae, who is blind in one eye and joined Rosie’s just last year following a sanctuary surrender, trots right up for pets. Don’t be shy, she’s incredibly soft and cuddly!

If you didn’t get to attend the MoCo Greens tour, you can still meet the animals through Rosie’s regular community tours and events. Sign up to visit, volunteer, or donate to support these animals and Rosie’s future rescues.
